Assamese jewellery styles are adorned with motifs of flora and fauna as well as musical instruments.

Here’s everything you need to know about the beautiful styles of Assam traditional jewellery.

Dug-dugi:

Dug-dugi is an ornament for a woman’s neck. Dug-dugi is a heart-shaped pendant that is worn with Assam traditional dress by Assamese women.

Kerumuni:

A traditional Kerumuni has a hollow pendant called “Keru” with the strands made of Pearls or moti.

Initially, this type of design was only used in earrings but as the trends have evolved, it is now being used in the pendants as well.

Thuriya:

These are the traditional Assamese earrings that consist of a very unique shape.

The design of the front side looks like a flower. It has a thin middle portion and a wider bottom portion that helps the earrings to stay intact in the ears.

Thuriya earrings look beautiful when paired with Assam traditional dress.

Gam-kharu:

Gam Kharu, in fact, one of the most beautiful styles of Assam jewellery.

Made of Gold, Gam Kharu is a chunky bracelet/bangle. It comes with a golden knot that is used to open it. Because of this knot, it can fit anyone.

Loka-paro:

A traditional Loka Paro necklace consists of a pendant that is embellished with identical pigeons that are positioned one after the other. These pigeons are attached to a string containing gold beads and are adorned with a wide variety of gemstones such as Rubies, Emeralds, Amethyst, Rose Quartz, etc.

Jonbiri:

Jon means the Moon and Biri signifies the surrounding design of Jonbiri. A traditional Jonbiri consists of designs inspired by musical instruments, nature and household goods of Assam.

Dholbiri/Motabiri:

The traditional Dholbiri or Motabiri has the shape of a Dhol (a musical instrument).

Made with Gold, it is considered as one of the most popular decorative ornaments for Assamese women.

Almost every Assamese woman wears this style of jewellery with Assam traditional dress.

Gal-pata:

This is a choker necklace consisting a flat design that surrounds the neck.

Made of Gold, a traditional Gal Pata choker necklace is embellished with intricate floral designs and looks gorgeous with Assam traditional dress.

Different Jewellery Variations

1. The very first version includes the styles with a Gold frame. The filling is done with Silver or Lac metal.

Such styles (the ones that contain Gold as their base) are known as “Kecha Sonar Gahana” or pat Sonar Gahana.

2. The second version consists of a frame that is made with Silver or Lac. The filling is done with Gold foils.

3. The last one contains a silver frame as well as the silver filling. The entire piece is then coated with Gold metal.

Jorhat, Nagaon, and Barpeta are the main districts where Assamese jewellery is manufactured. In these regions, each and every piece of Traditional Assam jewellery is crafted with hands by the skilled artisans and workers of Assam (also known as ‘Sonari’ in the Assamese language).
